Governors

Harehills Primary School Governors Vision

We believe that every child at our school has the right to the best education. All children, staff and families will be treated with kindness, tolerance and respect for others. Every child matters in our school community and we encourage our children to be healthy, happy and safe. Every member of the school team contributes to provide opportunities and experiences for the whole child and we take pride in our school and the relationships and partnerships we have built on to ensure that our children thrive.

The school governors are a group of elected representatives chosen by the parents, the Local Authority (LA), the school teaching staff and the governing board. These people are willing to devote their time, enthusiasm and skill to governing the school.

The full governing board meet at least once a term. The sub committees are very active and meet regularly and include representatives from our Senior Leadership team.

Quote from a Governor:

"As a parent governor for the last four years, I have been involved in a variety of meetings and have learnt a great deal about how the school is run. It has been particularly interesting to learn about the Early Years and how the youngest children learn to read and write through play and how they develop their listening skills. My term as a governor has now come to an end but I can honestly say I have learnt a lot and enjoyed every moment. Thank you."

Bio

I am delighted to have joined the Governing Body at Harehills, and to have been elected to be Chair. The school has a strong history of excellent governance, and it is my aim to continue in this vein.

I have had a long career in education, teaching since 1989, and from 2000 taking on the role as Head Teacher in four schools in York, North Yorkshire and Kirklees. For eleven years I was a National Leader of Education supporting schools at times when they needed help to improve, either identified at an inspection or by their local authority or Trust. Over my time in education I have worked alongside many Governing Bodies, so I bring a lot of experience to bear in what works, and what doesn't.

I am married and have four grown-up sons, who we have supported through their Primary and Secondary Schools, with the trials and tribulations that it brings, but all four of them have grown up to be well-rounded adults and we are very proud of them. I want to offer the right support to the school and its families, so Harehills children get that same offer.

Since I retired from Headship in July 2023, I have kept myself busy with some continued part-time consultancy work, but more importantly have been able to indulge in my favourite past times, which have included a lot of visits to Headingley to watch the cricket, travelling a lot more and watching my beloved Wolverhampton Wanderers - please don't hold this against me!

Bio

I am Mrs Wood and I am very proud to be the Headteacher at Harehills Primary School.

I have worked in Education for over 20 years and have taught in Liverpool, Warrington, Halifax and even Egypt!

I am passionate about every child having the opportunity to grow, thrive and be the best that they can be! Whether that be at Maths or at dancing! I believe in valuing and nurturing the whole child.

When I'm not at school I enjoy spending time with my two children and taking Bruce the dog on muddy walks! I enjoy music and volunteer at Hospital Radio where I get to listen and play lots of different music genres. I also enjoy trying new things and I have even done a Skydive in the past.

Hello, I am Alec Waddington. I have worked at Harehills Primary School since 2008, becoming a class teacher in 2011 and PE Subject Lead shortly afterwards. In my ten years as a class teacher, I have been part of many special moments. I am particularly proud that some of the endeavours I have championed have contributed to Harehills' trophy cabinet. The words 'Harehills, Leeds debating champions' and 'Harehills, Yorkshire cricket champions twice over' always bring a smile. On the 8th March 2021, upon returning to school after lockdown, I saw Elford 1 all sit down, smiles on their faces, a huge desire for learning and a complete appreciation of what Harehills stands for. Perhaps cliche, it genuinely is my fondest memory in my thirteen years at Harehills. I endeavour in this role as staff governor, to conduct myself with the same level of gratitude and appreciation shown by my own class to service a school that has provided, and will continue to provide many, many special memories.

Bio

I have been a teacher since 2006 and have had the privilege to work at Harehills Primary School for over 16 years as a Class Teacher, Lead for Literacy, Assistant Head Teacher for Early Years and now the Deputy Head Teacher. I thoroughly enjoy working at such a forward thinking and exciting school. My educational interests are Literacy and Early Years although I do enjoy working across the whole primary age range.

In my spare time I enjoy cycling, singing, and spending as much time as possible with my family and friends who are now scattered all over the country, which gives me a good excuse to travel during the school holidays. My favourite place to visit is The Lake District – I am in the process of trying to bag all the Wainwright walks and am about a quarter of the way through!
