Deputy Head Teacher

I have been a teacher since 2006 and a teacher governor since 2011. I thoroughly enjoy working at such a forward thinking and exciting school. My educational interests are literacy and Early Years although I do enjoy working across the whole primary age range.

In my spare time I enjoy cycling, singing, and spending as much time as possible with my family and friends who are now scattered all over the country.

Attendance and Admissions Manager

Hello, I am Azhar Ali, and work at Harehills Primary School as Attendance and Admissions Manager. Before working at HPS, I was a Parent Support Advisor within the CHESS Cluster (2gether cluster). My role is to manage all aspects of attendance and admissions. I lead a team of LPCM's to improve attendance and punctuality across school.

I work closely with a large number of staff including the Pastoral Care & Safeguarding Lead, to ensure all children are in school and learning, and fulfilling their full potential.

Pastoral Care and Safeguarding Lead

Hi, I am Janet Haywood and work in school as Pastoral Care & Safeguarding Lead. I began working at school in 1992 as a Special Needs Nursery Nurse, with a short break in 1998 when I went to work as a Family Support Worker at the NSPCC, supporting children and families who were part of the 'looked after' system.

I came back to Harehills Primary in the year 2000 as a Learning Mentor and through training and experience, now lead the Learning and Pastoral Care Team. I work closely with the rest of the team, particularly Mr Ali, often making phone calls to parents and completing safeguarding home visits to make sure our children are safe when they have been absent for several days or classed as Children Missing Education (CME).

A large part of my role includes getting children into school every day. I make phone calls and complete home visits, and speak with parents regularly.

Our Attendance Team monitor school attendance and punctuality daily as your child’s learning and well-being is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that working together with parents/carers is the best way to result in positive attendance outcomes for our children and ask that you support us with ensuring your child regularly attends and is on time.

We cannot be complacent where there are instances of persistently low attendance, or if children are regularly late to school. Below are some of the ways we ensure attendance and punctuality remain a high priority in school.

  •  Weekly Attendance Team meeting.
  •  Each Key Phase has a Learning and Pastoral Care Mentor who works closely with children and families to support and encourage good attendance and punctuality.
  •  Learning Mentors deliver weekly attendance groups to targeted children with the aim of improving the children’s attendance over time.
  •  Late door – a member of the Attendance Team will greet you daily at the Main Entrance if your child arrives after 9am.
  •  Daily home visits for unexplained/unauthorised absences.
  •  Parent Workshops aimed at improving Attendance and Punctuality.
  •  Family Meetings (Exceptional Leave, Persistence Absences/Lateness, Improvement and Thank yous…)
  •  Working with Cluster schools to identify families requiring additional support.

Please visit the School Office if you wish to make an appointment to speak to a member of our Attendance Team.
