Autumn 1 in Bexley 1

The children decided to create cat toys during their provision time.

We have had a fantastic first half term in Bexley 1 and the children have been very busy. Our topic this half term is 'animals near.' We began by learning about ourselves, our 5 senses and the human body. As arists we created sculptures of ourselves using natural materials and plasticine. We also completed charcoal drawings of the people who live in our home. We developed our overlapping, scrunching and tearing skills whilst creating collages and experimented with colour mixing. As technologists we created moving pet pictures and learnt how to attach parts together using a hole punch and split pins. In computing, we have learnt how to log onto a laptop and navigate the mouse pad. We also used the ipad to take funny photos of each other during 'Hello Yellow' day. As scientists we discussed the different parts of our bodies - naming, identifying and labelling them. We took part in various senses activities to discuss what we could see, hear, smell, touch and taste. We then moved on to learn about pets. We described and compared the structure of the animals and developed our knowledge of their needs. Through our key text - "Not That Pet!" we thought about how we could help Mabel and others who may be wanting to get a pet. We decided to create posters to inform others about the different animals. The children planned which pet they wanted to write about, before using their plans to create their poster. As geographers, we have used maps to navigate around the school and made observations of where things are. As mathematicians, we have been focusing on the composition of 5 and how we can partition a number in different ways. We have also used key vocabulary to compare and describe weight, height and distance.
