Year 5 Debating Team Success

A huge congratulations goes to three year 5 pupils Khadija Hussain, Aleesha Shakeel, and Aisha Hussain for finishing third in the Leeds School's Debating Competition at the Leeds Civic Hall.

Debating 1

Having successfully navigated their way to the finals having won an earlier round back in April, the trio debated whether 'children should wear their own school uniform' and 'zoos are cruel for animals'. The Luxor 3 girls exuded such confidence throughout and lost only to the eventual winners Moor Allerton Hall.
Not only did our year 5s claim the bronze, but our very own Khadija won the award for 'Best overall speaker.'

Debating 2

The awards were presented by Cllr Mulherin and the recently elected Lord Mayor Jane Dowson. Follow the link for the news article. https://leedsstar.co.uk/leeds-primary-schools-debating-competition-2017/

As you may be aware, debating has become part of the National Curriculum since its change in 2014 and is playing a prominent part in our Harehills' themes. There are lots of budding debaters in year 5, and Mr Waddington and Mrs Summerfield expect to visit the Leeds Civic Hall again next year.
