Learning at Home
The ever changing picture of what is happening as a result of the spread of the coronavirus is an unprecedented concern and pressure for all of us. The School Wellbeing team have put together a very comprehensive document with links to information for families to help with Social, Emotional and Mental Health and wellbeing.
Even if you are self-isolating, staying active & healthy at home is important.
• Support families to ensure their children are learning, active and happy through providing a mix of online learning and paper Learning Packs.
• Ensure all pupils receive a high-quality education that best promotes their learning and well-being.
• Ensure regular contact with all children and families to offer support - both pastoral and academic.
At Harehills Primary we aim to offer the same broad and balanced curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, following our devices and internet survey, we have needed to make some adaptions to enable your child to effectively learn from home.
This is how your child will be taught remotely:
- Every child receives a high-quality printed Learning Pack linked to year group Themes taught in school. Our Learning Packs mirror as closely as possible the work that is taking place in school and build on your child’s prior learning. They offer a range of activities across subjects and are fully differentiated as appropriate for your child. Throughout the pack you will find website links to either White Rose Maths or Oak Academy. These have been carefully selected by the teacher to provide online lessons for your child to watch before they complete their work in the pack.
- The packs are delivered to your house every 2 weeks along with a recommended daily timetable to help structure the day for a balance of learning, physical activity, well-being and reflection time. Click on the thumbnail packs further down to see an example.
- Zoom Code of ConductFor children in Years 3-6, the class teacher, Teaching Assistant (TA) and year group Learning Mentor will host a Zoom ‘Class Meet’ each Monday, Wednesday and Friday which lasts for approximately 30 minutes – you will receive your Zoom invite link and time slot for the session as a text and an email. The Zoom ‘Class Meet’ will encompass time to review and provide feedback on the work done so far in Learning Packs, provide clear explanations of the work to come next, check understanding though questioning and quizzes, engage children in social time through news sharing and assembly, enjoy a class story together, and take part in other activities appropriate to individual classes/ year group.
- For children in Year 1 and 2, we have class Dojo to communicate regularly with families. Class teachers share links to online learning through Dojo for families to access. Parents can also share their children’s work via Dojo and a member of staff will provide feedback either via Dojo or during the catch-up phone call.
- Families have free access to educational platforms purchased by school such as Education City, Espresso and My Maths. The Learning Packs include links to pre-recorded online lessons from Oak National Academy, BBC Live TV and White Rose Maths. These lessons provide instruction for your child and supports them to complete the work set.
- Each year group also has a selection of links that enable direct access to some of the best online education resources such as BBC Bitesize, Daily Phonics, DK Find out, Tate Kids, White Rose Maths.
- At least one weekly check-in phone call to all families, and a year group email for families to use to contact teachers directly.
- The packs have been designed to be worked through daily following the suggested timetable and lessons, and so will take your child two weeks to complete. Once your child has completed their pack, you can post it in our new Learning Pack post box that is positioned on the inside of the gate at the front of school. Your weekly check-in phone call is an opportunity for the Teacher/TA to discuss and feedback on the completed work with you and your child.
- In Early Years we try not to put too much emphasis on formal education as we strongly believe that children learn best through PLAY. During a normal school day your child would spend the majority of their time in free choice play based activities. Most teaching takes place during the adults’ interactions with children as they encourage, model and challenge children during this play. As such we have designed our remote learning offer to allow for a range of play based activities with some work sheets and activity ideas that you can complete at home. There will also be daily phonics, maths and story activities uploaded onto Tapestry for you to access with your child.
- If your child is engrossed in playing at home e.g. with construction toys, small world play, puzzles or drawing, let them play for as long as they are interested.
If you have any questions about remote learning, please see the Parents FAQ section at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, contact your child’s class teacher via the year group email address provided or contact the school office.

Parents/Carers Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours a day should my child be learning for?
Recent Government guidance states the following:
The remote education provided should be equivalent in length to the core teaching pupils would receive in school. The amount of remote education provided should be, as a minimum:
• Key Stage 1: 3 hours a day on average across the cohort, with less for younger children
• Key Stage 2: 4 hours a day
Learning Packs sent home come with a recommended daily timetable to help you break up the day with a balance of learning, physical activity and well-being sessions.
How will my child access any online remote education you are providing? If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
Following a school survey sent to all families, we understand that out of approximately 730 children, only 151 families have reliable internet access, and of these, not all have a computer or laptop. Families do have a mobile phone, but again this creates complications as the majority of our families have more than 1 child requiring online access.
The government have issued 59 laptops for families to use at home. We have prioritised families in most need of the laptops and have lent them out to these families first. If you would like to find out further information about borrowing a laptop, please contact the school office.
For the above reasons, we have taken the decision to provide a paper Learning Pack for every child along with a weekly check-in phone call and regular Zoom ‘Class Meets’. We deliver the Learning Pack to your door every other Thursday – families will receive a text to inform them when a delivery will take place. Parents are notified which day they will receive a check-in phone call, and the Zoom link for ‘Class Meet’ is sent via a text message and email.
What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?
School expect parents to ensure children complete their home learning daily. We have provided a suggested daily timetable for children to follow but recognise that you as parent may want to complete learning in a way that works best for you and your child.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
Staff will make a weekly check-in phone call to all families to discuss and offer academic and pastoral support. As well as this, each Monday, Wednesday and Friday a ‘Class Meet’ will be hosted via Zoom to provide opportunities for children to ask questions, check misconceptions, take part in story time, assembly, social catch-ups, etc.
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
We have a new Learning Pack post box that is positioned on the inside of the gate at the front of school for you to post your child’s completed Learning Pack. Your weekly check-in phone call is an opportunity for the teacher/TA to discuss your child’s completed work with you and your child. During the Zoom ‘Class Meets’ adults will check children have learnt and understood the Learning Pack content through a variety of ways, eg, questions, quizzes, asking children to feedback/present, etc. Families with children in EYFS can upload their observations via Tapestry in the usual way, and families with Year 1 and 2 children can upload their work via Dojo.
How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote learning?
We recognise that some children, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:
• We provide an example timetable to follow
• We provide a pack with learning activities, speech and language activities, suggestions for online pre-recorded lessons, and examples of sensory and physical activities
• We organise Speech and Language sessions to be delivered by the S<
• We organise support from STARS
• We make weekly phone calls and send check in emails
• We make home visits when the packs are delivered or if requested by parents
